Mustard is an ancient spice, and was a stardard ingredient during much of the 19th century. Mustard was avaiable in our modern day paste or powdered form, and was heralded for its medicinal properties, it was used as a cure for anything from congestion to snakebite. Although other styles had appeared, the classic style of the 19th century was the barrel shape that we offer here. Barrel mustard bottles appear in glassmaker catalogs, and are molded to mimic the bands of a wooden barrel.
There are several soldier accounts of private soldiers adding mustard to their diets, either by liberating it from captured enemy baggage or by being sent from home. In light of its belief of medical use, it would make the perfect addition to the soldier's package from home.
