Underwood is now famous for their deviled ham products but their origins were with other fruits and vegetables. Englishman William Underwood started his business in 1825 with several partners. By the mid 1830's, he was importing tomato plants from England to start growing in the United States for domestic canning. According to their recipe, one bottle of ketchup required two dozen tomatoes.
Our reproduction bottle is based upon examples salvaged from the wreck of the Steamboat Bertrand, which contained several crates shipped by Underwood of Boston. It is believed that these, and other bottles were produced by the Ellenville Glass company.
Our reproduction is of mouth blown green glass, and features the classic 19th century banded reinforcement at the lip.
