This reproduction came as a direct result of examining several of the artifacts of the wreck of the steamboat Bertrand, which sank in 1865. Among these artifacts, were several cases of Brandied Peaches in what can only be described as utility bottles. Measuring at 11 inches, these stout bottles were clearly commercial packaging, as they lack embossing or any other adornment. This bottle is mouth blown one at a time, of clear glass as per the original. The corresponding label is included with each bottle, whose recreation was a labor intensive undertaking unto itself.
William K. Lewis and Brothers were well established by the Civil War, having had a location in Boston several years prior to the outbreak of hostilities. Their initial location burned in 1854, but they had rebuilt by the time of the war, and maintain several locations until their bankruptcy in 1889.
W.K. Lewis had several patents for food stuffs, including a pea sheller in 1866, and a patent in 1877 for Boston Baked Beans. Brand names like Wells and Provost and W.K. Lewis were household names in early the 1860's. This reproduction is offered to represent their prominent position in the commercial marketplace of the Civil War.
