The so called "Cathedral" style bottle was the universal commercial packaging of the 1860's, and was equivalent to the plastic bottles of our day. It is important to note that these were used almost universally for commercial packing, and were the first choice for food packing houses over tin cans. These were not sold to the home canning market, but could conceivably used as an "after market" home canning method. Examples excavated from period shipwrecks, which retained their contents, were found to contain things from fruits and vegetables to honey. There were plain, geometric styles, sometimes branded styles for a particular food packing house, as well as ornate styles. We have added this style, which features elliptical fields surrounded in a wreath pattern.
