The term Cathedral comes from the resemblance to the Gothic archiecture which was widely in vogue in the 1860's. These jars came in different sizes, and were found on the wrecks of both the Arabia and Bertrand, as well as Civil War campsites.. Used as a commercial packaging, it was found to contain prepared vegetables and fruits such as sweet pickles and cherries.
Owing to the large number of excavated examples, this jar is one of the most grossly under-represented items in the living history hobby today. Sutler purchased foodstuffs as well as packages sent from home were guaranteed to contain at least one cathedral jar of eatables.
