Carbonated soda water was developed in the latter part of the 18th century to emulate the natural spring waters found in europe. In America, Saratoga New York, (later known for its Saratoga Springs)was the most popular of the late 18th and early 19th century. There was considerable experimentation, and by 1807, fruit flavored carbonated water was being sold in Philadelphia.
In the 1830's, an englishman, Nicholas Paul, who was a partner of Jacob Schweppe (of Schweppe's Ginger Ale fame), developed round bottom bottles which were designed to remain horizontal, and keep the cork wet and prevent the carbonated gasses from escaping. This style of bottle, which has become known among collectors as the torpedo style remained in use through the early 20th century. There were also ornate silver plated baskets to hold them when serving them at the dinner table.
As per the original bottles, the glass is thicker to withstand the pressure of the glass. Our reproduction is made with a separately applied "blob" top lip.
